How it Used to Be

Taking a delicate piece of cloth

and spreading it out large,

examining it,

or pulling up a chair to sort

the beads spread out

to find the just-right one,

or kneeling, hands folded and eyes closed

with lips forming small whispers,

or lying down with foreheads pressed together

just before a kiss.
